//Song Review// 'Elephant Girl'~Vinok
‘Elephant Girl’ is the latest single from Ukrainian-American Indie rock band Vinok, which follows the story of a woman and her journey of transformation as she discovers she is more than her disability.
The song carries an empowering energy the whole way through starting with thumping drums and deep bass which create almost the sound of battle drums as if the character is preparing for battle each day she wakes up, vocals resemble questions she may ask herself each day, or the comments that may come her way, she is seen as letting it all pass by however, inside she is confident and has a voice ready to be heard.
The chorus crashes through with gritty guitars and powerful vocals which intensifies the fighting spirit that’s established in the first verse of ‘Elephant Girl’, it grips you, demanding you to focus on every lyric, a trumpet pops in and out of the chorus as if it were a hit against the character’s built up walls, declaring successful blows each time against the brick.
The second verse is poetic in rhythm, as the character begins to follow her own beat growing in confidence the more, she sings, demanding she be heard, her voice as valid as everyone else’s.
The vocals becoming more pleading as the listener reaches the final section of the song, you can hear the powerlessness in the vocals ‘I’m Sick of all the rules, I’m sick of the games’ the transformation described in the song is incredible and realistic, one day we all find the strength within ourselves to be who we want to be, sometimes it just takes others a little extra time.
‘Elephant girl’ is a song that makes sure it'll be remembered, ending with poignant words that will stick in your mind long after the music has faded out.
‘its true that my form is odd, but blaming me is blaming god’
