//Interview// Undersound
From performing before the royal family to choosing a themed musical alias you could say Gareth Evans aka Undersound has done it all but he isn't quite finished yet.
You have so many credits/experiences under your belt, which would you say has been most surprising?
Oh god, I'm not sure I can choose ha ha, would be like picking a favourite cat!
I think I feel the most fortunate in what I’m doing right now, honestly feel so lucky to have the backing of a label to put out this kind of album where I can really express myself how I want eclectically from track to track. Being to able to include and feature so many of my talented friends is an amazing feeling too!
You’ve played in Multiple orchestras both chamber and symphony, which orchestra do you prefer and why?
I love the intimacy and space of playing in a smaller chamber group, but the feeling of sitting in a full symphony orchestra going at full throttle playing some Dvorak or Tchaikovsky or something is unrivaled! I think of the top of my head my favourite orchestral experience was playing Shostakovitch's 5th symphony in Wells Cathedral when I was 17. I’m surprised I can remember that far back, but it’s ingrained into me, was such a huge moment for me emotionally and physically I’ll never forget that feeling!
You have played for members of the royal family, what has that experience been like?
Again, many moons ago. It’s not really that glamorous at all. It’s an odd thing though because on one hand you’re just doing what you’ve done day in day out, playing a concert or whatever, but there’s always an extra level of tension thrown in the mix by the security and the formalities of it all.
I once stood on prince Charles’s foot when trying to speak to him and shake his hand simultaneously, ha ha, multitasking.
what book are you reading right now?
I currently have two on my bed side table – 1. The history of Jazz by Ted Gioia, which is highly educational and 2. 'Deception point' by Dan Brown which I’m re-reading, I first read it like ten years ago but having just read his new one ‘Origins’ I wanted to go back and re-read 'deception point'. Im not going to like though, Im not loving it as much as I did first time round.
You released a new track in April , what was the inspiration behind that track?
So the track is the title track off my album which came out at the same time.
The song was written about the end of a relationship, and the void that’s left when you’ve spent several years growing together as a dependent unit. Then when that person is gone you need to work out how to pick yourself up and move your life on on your own path, which at first seems impossible and riddled with despair. But to quote Dr Ian Malcolm “Life………. Finds a way”
How did the name undersound come about?
It’s a shame to end on this question as I have a rubbish answer for it ha ha.
I honestly cant remember. When I decided I had to have a super hero / evil villain musician type alias. I do remember I had two that I was deciding between. The end ha ha (cool story)
