Travelodge, and notebooks, two things that go well together for Lead singer and guitarist of Indian Queens, Jennifer, along with her band's new release 'You came over late' and touring,Jennifer talks about what made her want to be in a band, music venues and what she can't leave the house without.

What was the inspiration behind the name?

Indian Queens is a small town in Cornwall. Named after Pochahuntas who visited the town

what was the first music venue you played? what was it like?

We didn’t actually play a venue as such, it was a warehouse in North London called New River Studios, still one of the most original we’ve done! We were reminiscing the other day, so we might bring these type of gigs back! Watch this space ...

You recently released 'you came over late' what is your favourite lyric from the song and why?

‘I’d rather be a rebel than a slave’ taken from the film Suffragette it inspired the whole song.

you are touring soon i assume, what is your favourite thing about touring?

Travelodge! And other things, we love the day to day, meeting new people, hopefully changing somebody’s day from a shit one to better? We live for playing live, it's a real payoff from spending months on end in the studio.

Europe is always a lot of fun, love experiencing new food and cultures when we're on the road. Germany for beer, France and Italy for great wine, got to bring stuff back right? The important stuff haha!

what made you want to be in a band

Watching and listening to bands when we were young. Mine and Katherine’s dad is still a drummer so we grew up backstage watching shows from a very early age. He inspired us to get up and do it, and never give up. Music is something you make or don’t.

what musician would you love to get drinks with and why?

Josh Homme. We both love Tequila and the Desert, just spent a week out in the Joshua Tree experiencing both. I'm pretty sure we'd get along.

what item do you always take with you anywhere?

A notebook, it's honestly my best friend, its great whenever you want to get down art or lyric ideas.

what is your favourite show? how has it influenced you?

Our favourite show was playing Meltdown festival last year, it was utter madness receiving a letter from Robert Smith asking us to play. We were supporting an Italian band JoyCut and they really had an amazing light show and backdrop of film. It's really promted us to up our game visually, it was really vivid stuff.

what was the thought behind the single artwork for 'You came over late?'

I had drawn this piece in Hackney Wick a couple of weeks before we sent the artwork off for the single. It struck me because the lady lying there can be interpreted in so many different ways, just like the single. Nudity is such a powerful thing and the lady in our artwork is open and free, we think its a symbol of power.

what can we expect from upcoming releases?

Vibe pure vibe. We are constructing a record to be listened to in the dark, driving at night. Looking to release an album early next year....
