Mugzy Interview
Reyne Brady aka Mugzy is a 27-year-old hip-hop artist, actor and youth mentor.H has been in the music game for 13 years and has so far completed 2 albums and is currently on a third. He's been featured in Multiple Independent Films/TV Commercials over the years and has a large fan-base worldwide. I interviewed him about how music has helped him and music grow as well as who inspired him to start making music. When would you say you first got into hip-hop music? I became interested in hip-hop music and the culture of hip-hop when I was 14 so 2005 my early years in High School Around that time I guess you could say I was a bit of a loner which caused me to get punk'd/bullied a lot also, my grades were failing i had no avenue where I would be in life when I finished school So instead I bought myself an iPod an started listening to artists such as Eminem, 50 Cent, Tupac Eminem was the one I could relate to the most (Even to this day) I know It sounds cliché because I'm a typical white boy myself but just the Aggression/Anger in his wordplay/lyrics It kinda gave me a voice to say I Don't give a f*** a platform to fight back an take no sh** in this world Starting Off I would drop down small rhymes in my workbook but I knew if I wanted to progress I would have to write full lyric songs Also, I knew if I wanted to be known or respected by the general hip-hop community who loves it as much as I do then I would have to do my homework take a trip back in time where it all started in the 70s of South Bronx and learn bit by bit Was there a specific artist who you listened to and was like 'i make music like that'?
I couldn't just tell you ONE it's too hard there has been so many over the years BUT I WILL SAY THIS even though its clique because I'm a white boy myself haha Eminem was the 1st Artist I ever listen to who got made me want to start writing music and embrace this Culture He was the one who broke that barrier of hip hop which was formally a black domain of music like he gave white rappers a voice to be heard in this culture Like I know before he came into the scene there were white artists such as Vanilla Ice, MC Serch, Beastie Boys, RA The Rugged Man etc BUT I don't think they had a big enough impact on the scene like Eminem did (His the Elvis of hip-hop) Do you feel by rapping it has helped you grow as a person?
100% Absolutely When I first started my career with only a few tracks under my belt (Demo Material) I would try and reach out to as many people/places/opportunities as I possibly could just to see who'd be willing to collaborate or even help me boost my career a bit more or at least take the time to be willing to check out my work Majority of the time it would be a dead end road because it always came down to an ego standpoint (especially with the artists) like "Who are you? we never heard of you? so why should we f*** with you? and give you the time of day? Prove to us that you're worthy enough?" (When the majority is against you a lot of artists tend to quit because of this situation) But not me I knew I wanted to give it my ALL and make my mark in this industry any possible way I could Now that I am more developed as an artist and have achieved incredible opportunities & multiple numbers along the way (Which most assume I have a manager finding me all these opportunities but no to tell you the TRUTH its just my drive/dedication & a whole tone of coffee along the way year after year haha) Most would think I have an Ego like "Hey I've achieved all of this on my own with no support now prove to me what you got?" like those artists who were developed in the past done to me when I tried to reach out But from going through that hurt & pain & lack of empathy it kinda gave me a sense of respect for the next artist or aspiring person who reaches out to me I receive countless amount of messages daily from artists around the world saying "Hey would you be willing to check out my material or give it a like/share it would really help me out"and I always take the time out of my schedule (a few hrs a day) to check them out and give feedback on it however i can From doing this it builds respect/connections and overall longevity friendships With me, i don't care if they don't have a HUGE numbers/followings or Even if their work is not TOP NOTCH or they haven't been in the game for that long I DON'T
CARE If they are willing to take the time to get in touch with me then I'm happy enough to give my support any way I can The Ego thing to me is BS straight BS Why should you put down the next person who has the exact same dreams & aspirations as you just because their numbers or popularity/following ain't as high as yours it doesn't make sense to kill it......Any Opportunity is a great opportunity....Underground artists WAKE THE F***** UP (Real Talk) If you did a show with 3 rappers or hip hop artists, dead or alive, who would be on the lineup? Damn only 3?
50 Cent, Eminem, Tupac
