Dead! Interview

It can take bands a long time to perfect their sound,in DEAD! case the 5 years they have been going has been worth it. This year around the end of January this year they release their debut album 'The Golden Age of Not Even Trying' I interviewed them about finding their sound, their favourite songs off the album and where the album's name came from.

Where did the name of the album come from? Well we couldn’t really decide on a title. We had quite a few ideas but nothing that stuck or felt right, yknow? We were throwing some fresh ideas about over a coffee when we remembered being in the studio, in Soho, tracking the record and our producer (Charlie Russell) was making notes on the takes like SNARE BETTER IN TAKE 13 or something. When we were recording the track “The Golden Age” and it didn’t have a proper name he had circled that lyric for some reason. And thinking back on it it just felt like a fit for the record. Its very apt for the time that we’re living in.

Whats your favourite song on the album, either as a collective or individuals? Thats a tough one, the record has so many different vibes inside its overall flavour yknow? I think my personal favourite is the closing track “Youth Screams & Fades”. It’s our first album so I suppose the themes are a sort of summary of the last 5 years of our lives. This is definitely a song about growing pains that really hits the nail on the head for me.

How do you feel your music and the band has changed since your first release 'Tu Me Manques' in 2014 and up to now with your new album ? Well we’ve found our sound. We’ve moved away from the emo-rock scene and discovered that Dead! is just a strong British rock band. We’ve tidied up our writing, actually learnt to play our instruments and built a brand and look that’s something we all can be proud of. As you grow your tastes and opinions change with your experiences. I guess it just took us a couple of years to find our feet. This record is us standing up on our own for the first time. The songs are us flexing our muscles and the new live show is the boys coming out swinging.

Other than the fact that its the title track why did you release 'The Golden Age of not even trying?' first? Is there any specific story or reason? In traditional industry style the label pushed the release back a couple of times so Enough Enough Enough and Up For Ran$om were technically the first out. We wanted to drop a new single the day we announced the album and the title track felt like the right move. It shows a more indie side of Dead! - but with cooler guitars. Bigger choruses, a festival vibe. Better parts, real lead guitar yknow? We’re a fucking rock band so we gave you a song that rocked.

The Golden Age of Not Even Trying is out on the 26th January, check out the title track below:
