Joel Baker Interview
From a 4 track EP on Nebo,to shows on excellent tours like the Coffee House Sessions.Everyone starts somewhere.
What are your main musical influences? I love early Bob Dylan. And good rap music. Kanye, Chance, Common, The Roots. Inspired a lot early on by the blues guys Muddy Waters & co, bleeding into the Hendrix's & Led Zeps. That still comes across a bit I think. More recently nu soul and RnB. Jeff Buckley is a big influence. So is the new modern folk guys like Ben HowardJustin Vernon & Fink. When did you start making music? Maybe about 13 years old. Picked up a guitar. Never put it down since. I got a 4 track recorder for Christmas once. Put out a terrible EP on Bebo once before facebook was even invented. Crazy times. -What advice would you give to an aspiring musician? Ask yourself, is this something I would do for free anyway, or am I just doing this 'to make it'? If it's the latter, you're never gonna make it. The journey is too hard. If it's the former, work a lot and enjoy the journey. Do your research and learn from the greats, not just what's out there right now. Surround yourself with good people, people outside the industry too. Helps you get perspective. Don't rush into things, but also take every opportunity you can. Never let comfort come before a good decision. Describe your music in one word? Honest Tell me an interesting fact about you I'm a quarter Portuguese. Who inspires you most? My nephew
