Elea Calvet:Interview

Don't let anything stop you because you are young,Elea Calvet does just that,at 19 years old she is talented and ready to take over the world. Here is my interview with her.

when did you start writing music?

I played piano and Violin from the age of 3 followed by Yangqin, Damnien and wrote poetry when I was around 8 but it would have been extremely messy as there was no way I could do both simultaneously. The first time I remember having a fully formed song would’ve been at around 12 when I started playing guitar.

How did all the members of your band meet?

I started out as a solo act, which didn’t suit the music I wanted to make so I started collaborating with lots of people to see who’d be most appropriate to work with initially. I then met my bassist at college, we started looking for more musicians through ads and recommendations and went from there. We’ve had quite a few changes in line up but it seems fairly settled now!

Who inspires you?

Lyrically, Leonard Cohen, enormously, he just has a level of poignancy that hardly anyone comes close to. Arrangement wise, my latest discovery that I have on loop is Alice Coltrane, her album Journey in Satchidananda is phenomenal.

On the 25th of October you released your single 'trigger' could you tell me what inspired it/what it's about?

“Trigger” is about betrayal, grief and acceptance.

If you were on a desert island and you could only listen to one album what would it be?

Tom Waits “Closing Time” would surely be my go to for any situation where I’m slowly dying of dehydration!

describe your music in one sentence

Open to interpretation.

what item can't you leave the house without and why?

Nothing really, apart from my phone that acts as notepad and wallet, when I’m not already carrying my guitar around I prefer not to be encumbered by a bag unless it’s really necessary.
